Nine Easy Ways You Can Get Active
There are many ways, large and small, in which an informed person can help turn the tide in favor of marijuana policy reform. Each of us has different talents; fortunately, there is a role in this effort for everybody:
1. Learn who your legislators are and get in the habit of contacting them with your views on marijuana policy. Decision-makers are listening to somebody, and if you keep your views to yourself, you can hardly blame them for not listening to you. Email info@nhcommonsense.org and tell us what town you live in -- we will be happy to tell you who your representatives are, what we know about them, and how you can get in touch with them about your support for marijuana policy reform!
2. Support legislators who earn your support, and oppose legislators who don't. When election season rolls around, remember that a few votes one way or another can make all the difference. There are many ways to help candidates you like, such as holding signs, distributing literature, and (simplest of all) telling your like-minded friends to get off their butts and vote.
3. Distribute promotional material (matchbooks, stickers, etc.) for NH Common Sense. Do you know anybody who would like to display an "Another Medical Marijuana Voter" sticker? In some circles, you might find that our matchbooks are an excellent conversation starter.
4. Learn all you can about marijuana and prohibition policy. If you have your facts straight, you'll be far more persuasive in any conversation. One book we recommend is Drug War Facts, by Doug McVay. You can read the whole book online at drugwarfacts.org. For info on medical marijuana, the library at MPP.org is a great source.
5. Find ways to promote your views on the internet. There are countless forums for discussion on the internet. If you like to write, setting up your own blog is a piece of cake, and promoting posts by other bloggers is even easier than that. NH Common Sense has a Facebook page and a MySpace page which are now being updated more frequently, so share our stuff and anything else you find that is good!
6. Contribute (or convince your friends to contribute) to NH Common Sense. Every little bit helps, and contributions of any size are strongly appreciated. Click here to support our efforts with a one time contribution, or to become a monthly subscriber.
7. If you're a student, write a paper about marijuana policy for class. This is a great way to make school more interesting and become informed about marijuana policy at the same time!
8. If you choose to use marijuana, be responsible. Most adults who use marijuana do so responsibly, but stereotypes persist. The best way to fight these stereotypes is by becoming a successful person and living a good life.
9. Visit the statehouse to show your support. A few dozen responsible-looking citizens showing support for a marijuana reform bill can make all the difference on legislators. Stay tuned to NHCommonSense.org and the NH Common Sense newsletter for updates on pending legislation.
